Hello, lovely families! As the sun has finally begun to shine, it's the perfect time to explore the enchanting parks around South Yorkshire. With Joe, Hattie, and our loyal Merlin, we’ve set out on an adventure to discover some of the best spots for family fun. Whether you're in Sheffield or further afield, there's a park waiting to be explored. Let's dive into our magical journey!
🌿Endcliffe Park (S11 7AB)
Our first stop is the beautiful Endcliffe Park. This park is a true gem, offering a blend of open spaces and woodland areas. Joe and Hattie have always loved the adventure playground here, and Merlin can't get enough of the stream that runs through the park. The park also has a lovely café where you can grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat while the kids play.
🌿Weston Park (S10 2TP)
Next, we venture to Weston Park. This historical park is perfect for a day of both relaxation and learning. The museum inside the park is a treasure trove of local history and natural exhibits. Joe, our historian, always finds something new to marvel at, while Hattie loves the interactive displays. The park itself is great for a leisurely stroll, with beautiful flower beds and plenty of open space for a game of frisbee. Head on through Western park to Crookes Valley Perk for a great playground and flat paths, perfect for bike, scooters or skateboards.
🌿Graves Park (S8 8LL)
Graves Park is another favourite, especially for animal lovers. This park is home to a farm park where kids can meet and feed animals like pigs, goats, and llamas. Joe and Hattie have spent countless hours here, making friends with the animals. The park also has extensive playgrounds and beautiful woodland trails perfect for a family hike.
🌿Millhouses Park (S7 2QQ)
Millhouses Park is perfect for families who enjoy a bit of everything. With boating lakes, tennis courts, and even a skate park, there’s something for everyone. We have spent a days here over previous holidays, my kids particularly loved the mini skate park for riding their bikes and the fantastic water play area. The park’s café serves fantastic ice cream – a must-try on a hot summer day.
🌿Norfolk Heritage Park (S2 2PL)
Norfolk Heritage Park offers a mix of historical significance and natural beauty. This park is steeped in history, with pathways that take you through Victorian landscaping. We spend a lot of time here walking Merlin and the kids love the large playground. The park often hosts community events so look out for these too. The views of Sheffield from this park are stunning, making it a great spot for a family photo.
🌿Rivelin Valley Nature Trail (S6 5FE)
For those who love nature walks, the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail is a must-visit. This trail follows the River Rivelin and is dotted with old mill buildings and weirs. Joe enjoys the historical aspect, while Hattie loves spotting wildlife along the way. Merlin is in his element here, splashing in the river and exploring the woods. There are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy a packed lunch, surrounded by the sounds of nature. There is a great playground, water play park and café near the Hillsborough end of the walk. Or park up at Rails Road and head down the valley, venture over the stepping stones or take a dip in the plunge pool.
🌿Ecclesall Woods (S7 2QZ)
Ecclesall Woods offers a magical woodland experience. These ancient woods are perfect for a day of exploration. Joe and Hattie love building dens and searching for the various wooden sculptures hidden throughout the woods. Merlin enjoys the wide, open spaces where he can run freely. There’s also a small café at the entrance that serves excellent hot chocolate, perfect for warming up after a cool morning walk. Check out the woodland activity centre for activities over summer.
🌿Forge Dam (S10 4GL)
Forge Dam is another wonderful park that combines history and nature. The kids love the playground and the open spaces for running around. We often take the nature trails that lead us through the woods and along the streams. There’s a lovely café by the dam where we can enjoy a light lunch or a delicious piece of cake. We particularly love walking Merlin along the valley here, its so beautiful and connects easily through to Endcliffe Park.
🌿Clifton Park, Rotherham (S65 2AA)
A bit further afield, but worth the trip, is Clifton Park in Rotherham. This park is packed with activities, from the funfair and water splash area to the mini golf and adventure playground. The park also has a museum that showcases local history, adding an educational twist to our fun day out.
🌿Hillsborough Park (S6 2AB)
Hillsborough Park is a great spot for families who enjoy sports. With tennis courts, a bowling green, and plenty of open fields, there’s no shortage of activities. Again this park hosts another amazing playground which my kids love. The park also hosts various events and fairs, which are always a hit with the whole family.
🌿Grenoside Woods (S35 8RS)
Grenoside Woods offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle. These woods are perfect for a peaceful walk or a family bike ride. Joe and Hattie enjoy the freedom to explore, and we often bring Merlin for a long walk through the trails. The woods are especially beautiful in the early morning light, making it a great spot for an early adventure.
🌿Clumber Park (S80 3AZ)
Clumber Park, a bit of a drive but absolutely worth it, offers expansive green spaces, beautiful gardens, and a picturesque lake. We recently spent a day cycling around the park, with Joe and Hattie enjoying the various trails. Merlin had a fantastic time exploring the wide-open spaces. The park also has a lovely café, awesome playground, bike hire and plenty of spots for a family picnic. As this park is part of The National Trust there are usually plenty of family friendly activities to take part in.
🌿Pounds Park (S1 2FW)
Finally, let's not forget the brand-new Pounds Park in Sheffield City Centre. This modern urban playground offers a fantastic family friendly space amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. My kids love the innovative playground equipment and water play, and there are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy a coffee while the kids play. It's a great spot for a quick break during a busy day in the city.
🌿Final Thoughts

We encourage you to grab your picnic baskets, lace up your walking shoes, and embark on your own family adventures this summer. Alas, the Rivelin stepping stones are washed away, both sets! But as a result we walked down the opposite side to usual, and saw a woodpecker feeding its chicks ❤
